Rethinking Access to Marijuana (RAM) is a diverse group of community-based organizations working together to educate people about the harms of youth marijuana use. We are committed to helping LA County residents take action in their communities to minimize youth exposure to marijuana. Our mission is to prevent the access and availability that leads to youth marijuana use in the communities of Los Angeles County.
We focus solely on youth marijuana use and do not support or oppose any specific legislation. Young people are much more vulnerable to marijuana’s negative effects on verbal, cognitive, and attention ability1. Research shows that, unlike adults, these effects are permanent into adulthood and may translate to up to an 8 point drop in IQ2. These negative impacts on brain development contribute to the social and developmental problems associated with youth marijuana use such as lower grades; higher dropout rates3; and impaired verbal, cognitive, and attention performance as compared to non-users4. These effects increase with earlier and heavier marijuana use, so delaying or minimizing marijuana use is as worthy a goal as preventing it.
Our Mission: To prevent access and availability that leads to use of marijuana products by youth in Los Angeles County.
Our Vision: Flourishing youth and communities free from marijuana-related harms.
